Process Groups

Groups of Project-oriented Processes

Project-oriented processes can be organized into 5 different groups:

•  Initiating

•  Planning

•  Executing

•  Controlling

•  Closing

The process groups are linked by the results they produce. These process group interactions exit within each phase and also across subsequent phases. Moreover, the process groups are not discrete, one-time events and could overlapped and be repeated many time during a phase.

Repeating the Initiating Processes at the beginning of each phase is essential to keep the project focused on the business needs it was undertaken to address.

Initiating

Recognizing that a project or a phase should begin and committing resources to proceed.

Planning

Creating and maintaining a work program to accomplish the business need that the project was undertaken to address.

Executing

Coordinating human resources and all other resource usage to carry out the work plan.

Controlling

Ensuring that specific sets of metrics are met by monitoring and measuring progress and taking corrective measures when necessary.

Closing

Formalizing acceptance of a project or a phase and bringing it to an orderly completion.

Groups of Product-oriented Processes or Phases

Product-oriented processes are normally grouped into phases. Experience has shown that most project initiating organizations divide the project into smaller segments or phases to ease product creation. Each phase contains a different process group and, collectively the project phases are known as the project life cycle. Phase definition varies by application area. Product development projects from the pharmaceuticals industry are very different from building construction projects.

Web Publishing project can be organized into 6 phases:

1. Project Definition

2. Information Architecture

3. Design

4. Production

5. Integration and Launching

6. Maintenance

Each of the 6 phases is covered in details in Methodologies > Project Life Cycles.
